In brief

THE GOVERNMENT is bringing in multinational companies to run our schools, opening up the market in education. The government is to announce a list of the multinationals on Wednesday this week.

They include:

  • Group 4, with its notorious record in prisons.
  • Serco, with 20,000 staff in its operations in some 30 countries.
  • WS Atkins, with a turnover of 425 million a year and a workforce of 10,000.

None of these firms has any experience in running education. They are just out to make a profit.

A POWERFUL new report from the Christian Aid charity blames the governments of rich nations for condemning poor countries to "an ever increasing number of overwhelming catastrophes." The report, Unnatural Disasters, blames the massive increase in "natural disasters" on Western governments. They have failed to cut carbon dioxide emissions which cause global warming. Christian Aid estimates that by the year 2020 three quarters of the world's population, who are mainly in poor countries, could be at risk from flood and drought.
