Many fronts against Souter

BUS DRIVERS in three Stagecoach companies are turning the screws on millionaire owner Brian Souter. Drivers at Stagecoach's Western Bus in Ayr have voted to reject the company's pay offer, and to begin an immediate ban on overtime and rest day working. They rejected the 6 an hour offer by 257 to 197 despite a TGWU union recommendation to accept.

Over 700 Stagecoach drivers in Lancashire employed by Ribblebus held their first one-day strike on Wednesday of last week for 5.50 an hour. Mike Chambers, Ribblebus's boss, tried to run a scabbing operation with mangers from around the country. The last time he did this a scab bus killed a picket, Frank Dean, on the Blackburn picket line in December 1998. The drivers were set to hold another one day strike on Friday of this week.

Stagecoach drivers in east Kent were due to hold their second one-day strike on Tuesday of this week over working conditions. Souter has always tried to play off his 19 companies around Britain against each other. But now drivers are beginning to take action together.

  • BUS DRIVERS employed by the Go Ahead group on Brighton and Hove buses are balloting for a one-day strike over pay.
