SOME 65 people attended a Defend Council Housing campaign conference in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, on Saturday of last week. Anti-privatisation campaigns from Barnsley and Halifax were well represented, as were tenant and trade union groups fighting to halt transfer plans by Sheffield and Huddersfield councils. Everyone, including the numerous Labour Party members present, was shocked by New Labour's continuation of the Tories' privatisation schemes for council housing.
