Legalise cannabis

SOME 15,000 people marched in south London on Saturday to call for the legalisation of cannabis. There was a carnival atmosphere, with music and dancing in the streets. Many people had come simply because they wanted to be able to use cannabis without harassment from the police.

Many others had come to express wider concerns. One protester, Sarah, said she hoped the election of Ken Livingstone would be "the first step towards legalisation". Her friends Amy and Adam said they had been on the May Day protests, and that the legalise cannabis march was part of the same battle against capitalism.

Kurt, from Austria, had also been protesting against capitalism on May Day. He had been on the protests against the far right in Austria and was pleased that people in Britain are also standing up against the system.
