He will benefit
THE PLANS for dumping elderly NHS patients in private nursing homes was drawn up by the government's "Modernisation Action Team". The head of the modernisation team is Dr Chai Patel. He is also head of the third largest private nursing home company, Westminster Healthcare plc. The firm is anti-union and was originally a subsidiary of US company National Medical Enterprises Inc, later called Tenet. Tenet was one of the biggest and most notorious private healthcare firms in the US. It has been accused of insider dealing, bribery, medical fraud and abuse of patients.
PRIVATE nursing homes are dominated by big firms who make a profit out of "granny farming". The standard of care in these homes is a scandal. Elderly people are often denied proper privacy, care and medical support, and instead left to rot in front of blaring television sets. In several notorious cases elderly people have died when they have been moved from hospital wards to private homes. Three elderly patients died within 22 days of being moved from a hospital to a private nursing home in Winchester in 1998.
