THE CONGRESS of South African Trade Unions, COSATU, has called a general strike for Wednesday 10 May against the ANC government's business-friendly economic policies. A COSATU spokesperson said that "thousands of quality jobs have been replaced by casualised, subcontracted, sweatshop and temporary jobs that put more of the working class into poverty." An estimated 100,000 marched against job losses through Johannesburg last month in the run up to the strike. It was the biggest demonstration of its kind since the end of apartheid and the election of the ANC government in 1994.
