Teachers

Sheffield

SHEFFIELD TEACHERS in the NUT union are to ballot for a campaign of one-day strikes following a strong yes vote in an indicative ballot. The strike call is directed against redundancies in schools and the Pupil Referral Service. But the focus is very much on the Fresh Start proposals for the Herries school. Herries is in the constituency of education secretary David Blunkett and has become a national focus for the discredited Fresh Start policy. Teachers at Herries, which serves one of the poorest areas in the city, are being forced to reapply for their jobs. The recent advertisement for posts at the school ruled out any applicants who do not "aspire" to apply for performance related pay.

TEACHERS AT Moreland Primary School in north London tore up their performance related pay applications last week
