"I THOUGHT they were meant to have abolished slavery, but that is practically the state we are in." That was the angry comment of student nurse Ian de Wulverton from east London on Monday. He was one of over 150 student nurses who waved banners from the top of the Millennium Wheel in London in protest at their low pay and conditions. The nurses then headed off to parliament to voice their anger to their MPs in a lobby called by their UNISON union.
Nursing students are forced to survive on a paltry bursary of �5,000 a year-which works out at just �2.60 an hour. Many are forced to take two or three jobs just to survive-hardly an encouragement for more people to take up nursing!
