Blair's Britain

  • LONG working hours for parents cause stress-related health problems among their children. A new report-Time Bomb: Why We Need to Change the Way We Work by Shirley Conran-found that "downsizing" increased insecurity, and the growth of the 24 hour society had produced a workforce that was "stretched to its limits".

One in five children suffered from stress as a result. The "long hours culture" meant "a significant threat to the health of every individual that is caught up in it".

  • THE government virtually abolished legal aid this week for thousands of the poorest people. "It's looking like the privatisation of legal aid," said Michael Napier, vice-president of the Law Society. Instead people will be forced into "no win, no fee" agreements with lawyers.
  • THE parent company of a firm which runs private prisons in Britain has been slammed by the United States justice department. The Wackenhut Correction Corporation runs a young people's prison in Louisiana. The US justice department says action is needed because of "life-threatening conditions" there. The firm's subsidiary, Premier Prison Services, runs four private prisons in Britain in South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Durham and Scotland.
