Tameside

TWO YEARS after striking against attacks on pay and conditions, 18 Tameside carers have lost their case for unfair dismissal at an industrial tribunal. Tameside Care Group sacked 200 strikers in June 1997 and reached a settlement with the strikers' GMB and UNISON unions in May 1999.

But 18 strikers did not accept the settlement. They wanted to continue to fight Tameside Care Group, and to highlight the conditions for workers and residents in the homes. The unanimous decision of the tribunal went against the strikers and, to the anger of all involved, made no criticism of the Tameside Care Group.
