Back Faith Ryan
JUST DAYS after the Labour-supporting Dave Prentis won the leadership of UNISON last week, he showed the assault on activists within the union would go on. Faith Ryan, a shop steward in Birmingham council, was expelled from UNISON last Friday. This scandalous decision by the union's leaders is the latest in a vendetta they are waging against the left.
- Roddy Slorach, convenor of the social work department in Glasgow UNISON, is awaiting his appeal against expulsion from the union.
- Candy Udwin and Dave Carr, UNISON branch officers at London's ULCH hospitals, are still waiting to hear if union leaders plan any action against them after a recent hearing.
- Other activists in Birmingham, Sheffield, Newham and elsewhere face hearings or the results of them.
Faith's "crime" was to challenge a full time UNISON official who arrived uninvited at a meeting with management in Birmingham over two years ago. This has been deemed "harassment", and Faith has been expelled from the union. Faith is also suspended from work by Birmingham's New Labour council.
