Third World debt

Million dead

ON TUESDAY the toll of children who have died due to debt this year reached one million. Every day world leaders delay cancelling the debt another 19,000 children will die unnecessarily. World leaders are already failing to reach the limited targets they set for debt relief last year. It was "delay for delay's sake" admitted the head of the World Bank, John Wolfensohn.

Jubilee 2000 has called further protests against debt on 29 February. These are aimed at the Japanese government, which is currently chairing the G8 group of the world's leading powers.

  • LONDON: Circle the Japanese embassy, Tuesday 29 February, 12 noon to 2pm, 101 Piccadilly (Green Park tube).
  • EDINBURGH: Protest outside the Japanese consulate, Tuesday 29 February, 12.30pm, Melville Crescent.
