Pledge on rail safety breached
RAILTRACK will stay in charge of rail safety despite last year's Paddington crash. The horrific deaths at Paddington led deputy prime minister John Prescott to promise to hand over safety to the Health and Safety Executive. Now New Labour is set to ditch this promise. In 1998 Railtrack spent just 1.4 million on rail safety-less than 0.25 percent of its 420 million profits.
