Blair's backyard job cuts

by a TGWU steward

WORKERS AT Schott Industrial Glass in Newton Aycliffe have been left reeling by the surprise announcement of 54 redundancies. The factory is in Tony Blair's Sedgefield constituency in the north east of England. Workers got a bonus before Christmas for hitting productivity targets and believed jobs were safe.

Stewards have launched a campaign and plan to send a coachload of workers to the company's headquarters in Mainz, Germany, to lobby shareholders. The union branch is affiliated to Sedgefield Constituency Labour Party, so we will be demanding Tony Blair intervenes too.

  • Messages condemning the job losses should be sent to Peter Claus, Schott Industrial Glass, Ketton Way, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham DL5 6SR.
