TRADE UNIONISTS across west London raised over 3,000 in support of the Lufthansa Sky Chefs workers at Heathrow airport in the run up to Christmas. The 270 Sky Chefs workers were sacked over a year ago after they held a legal one day strike against their employer's demand that they work harder for less money.
Collections took place in over 30 workplaces. They included 450 raised by UNISON members in Hammersmith, 100 from council workers in Hounslow and over 200 at the Public Records Office in Kew. Heathrow airport workers in the GMB/APEX union also donated 1,000. Angela, who helped organise the collection in Kew, says, "People gave money because they were outraged that a group of workers had been sacked simply for striking."
Over 20 people handed over the money to the Sky Chefs workers on their picket line. Javed, a Sky Chefs shop steward, thanked the workers for their solidarity and urged trade unionists to continue their support.
