Brilliant rage

by Robyn Mills

RAGE AGAINST the Machine are the most important rock band in the US. They were born out of the Sex Pistols, The Clash and Public Enemy. They are inspired by Malcom X, Marx and the Zapatistas.

Their third album, The Battle of Los Angeles, is out now. The 12 top quality tracks are a mixture of funk, metal and rap. They include songs about the US's barbaric treatment of Iraq, about Mumia Abu-Jamal, and about feelings in Mexico about US imperialism.

But it's not just the politics and lyrics which are good. The music consists of funky bass-lines, rocking riffs and angry rapping that make up a superb, energetic, angry and powerful album. It might not be to everyone's taste, but anyone who is into this sort of music should get this album now.

  • Rage Against the Machine are playing at Wembley Arena on Friday 28 January.
