Nick Leeovery

NICK LEEOVERY, branch secretary of Leicester East SWP, died suddenly on 17 December at the age of 37. Nick was a political activist throughout his adult life, joining the Labour Party and CND in his teens. He joined the SWP in 1993, following the Anti Nazi League demonstration at Welling-and as a party member he took to heart the idea of being the tribune of the oppressed. He was international officer of Leicester City UNISON, where he actively fought to defend workers' services.

Nick was a youth worker at Highfields Youth and Community Centre in Leicester since 1995. He constantly used his politics to help him in his work with young people and the wider Highfields community. The respect both he and his politics had could be seen in his central role in successful anti-deportation campaigns, justice meetings and moves to integrate asylum seekers into the local community.

Nick will be remembered as a leader, an organiser and a friend. We send our sympathies to his seven year old son, Peter, and all those affected as friends, family, comrades and colleagues. His funeral is due to take place in his home town of Market Drayton in Shropshire. A memorial service is planned to take place at the Highfields Youth and Community Centre.
