A RECORD number of elderly people died of the cold last winter. The Office of National Statistics says over 49,000 people died, the worst figure for ten years. The number of deaths is directly related to the shortage of staff and beds in the NHS, which suffered one of its worst crises last winter.

THE NHS suffered a massive shortage of intensive care beds over the holiday. The head of intensive care at the Royal London Hospital in east London said that at one point the nearest intensive care beds were in Yeovil in Somerset, on the Isle of Wight and in Doncaster.

SERVICES have been slashed so much in Suffolk that health chiefs were forced to borrow an ambulance from the Casualty TV series over Christmas! Patients were ferried around the town of Lowestoft by an ambulance with Holby General on its side. The ambulance has to be returned soon, however, so the BBC can start filming the new series.
