Chipping Norton goes on trial

Issue No. 2377

David Cameron’s former spin doctor Andy Coulson and ex-newspaper chief Rebekah Brooks began their Old Bailey phone hacking trial this week.

Both are ex-editors of the News of the World (NotW), which closed in 2011. They deny conspiring to intercept mobile phone messages over a six-year period.

Both also deny conspiring with ex-staff of News International (NI), publishers of The Sun, and others to commit misconduct in a public office.

Coulson faces the same charges on phone hacking and two counts of conspiring to make payments to public officials. So does NotW royal editor Clive Goodman.

Senior NotW executives Ian Edmondson and Stuart Kuttner also face phone hacking allegations. Brooks also denies conspiring to pervert the course of justice by hiding evidence. Her husband Charlie Brooks, her personal assistant at NI Cheryl Carter and the firm’s security head Mark Hanna, are also accused of perverting the course of justice.

The trial is set to last six months.
