University unions set to walk out over pay insult

by Sadie Robinson
Issue No. 2377

University workers were set to strike on Thursday of this week in a row over pay.

The national walkout involves the UCU, Unite and Unison unions. It’s the first action in a campaign to win decent pay after bosses offered a below-inflation 1 percent deal.

Max Watson is Unison branch secretary at London Metropolitan University. He spoke to Socialist Worker in a personal capacity.

“The action is about more than pay,” he said. “It’s about job insecurity, zero hours contracts and attacks on our conditions. People are fed up of being pushed around.”

“We need to escalate and take action alongside other unions in dispute.”

Liz Lawrence is vice president of UCU. She told Socialist Worker, “Employers need to wake up and recognise they have pushed staff too far.

“They should come back with a meaningful pay offer, or there will be more strikes and escalation.”
