MEMBERS OF the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) in Birmingham and around the country were deeply shocked to learn of the death of Dave Spencer.

Dave had been a member of the SWP’s forerunner, the International Socialists, since the early 1970s.

In Reading he helped to build a very strong branch, supporting the struggles of firefighters and many other workers, and the Right to Work campaign.

He was central to campaigns against racism and against the National Front.

He helped young people set up the School Kids Against the Nazis group, which launched a national paper and involved school students all over the country.

Dave trained to be a college lecturer in the 1980s and moved to Birmingham.

There he continued to be always on the side of the workers, whether it was in his union, Natfhe, the Anti Nazi League, Respect or the SWP.

Socialists in Birmingham and elsewhere will remember him as a committed fighter for his class, and as a sincere and warm person.

He will be sadly missed. We send our condolences to his partner, Sue.
