Higher education unions call united December strike over pay

Issue No. 2379

Higher education unions have called a national strike for Tuesday 3 December.

This follows a successful walkout by the UCU, Unite and Unison unions on 31 October. The Scottish EIS union is set to join the December strike.

The news followed a 90-strong UCU Left conference in London last Saturday.

The main discussion was how to take the campaign over pay forward. Further education lecturers focused on winning a yes vote in their strike ballot, which ends on Thursday of this week, and preparing to take action as soon as possible.

University lecturers looked at how to escalate action.

Lecturers discussed how to coordinate strikes and the campaign to defend democratic decision-making and structures within the union.

The meeting endorsed UCU Left candidate Loraine Monk for a forthcoming vice presidential election.
