Investigations launched after deaths in custody

Issue No. 2381

A criminal investigation is to be held into eight police officers and two police station staff following the death of Terry Smith in police custody in Surrey.

Terry, who was 33 years old, was arrested and restrained on 12 November under the Mental Health Act at Staines police station. He died 24 hours later in St Peter’s Hospital, Surrey.

And another death in police custody is also to be investigated. Kevin McGurty, aged 43, from Gretna, Scotland, died in police custody on Wednesday last week.

The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner said it will investigate the circumstances of Kevin’s death.

He became ill while being detained in Annan police station in Dumfries and Galloway.
