Strike hits callous St Mungo's homeless charity

Six workers at St Mungo’s North Herts Sanctuary in Hitchin began a seven-day strike last Saturday.

The Unite union members at the homeless shelter are paid up to £1,700 a year less than staff elsewhere in the organisation. They also receive less holiday entitlement. Workers have been refused all sick pay even for cancer investigation and surgery.

St Mungo’s took over the hostel a year ago and decided to expand services with no extra funding.

Hostel residents brought out coffee for pickets. Shockingly the manager sacked a picket who allowed a supporter into the hostel to use the toilet.
