Protesting in Leeds

Supporters of Hands off our Homes demonstrated outside the Leeds County Court on Thursday of last week as a tenant was brought in for failing to pay the bedroom tax.

The case was adjourned for two weeks to await the outcome of an appeal by the tenant against a refusal of an application for a discretionary housing payment.

Of the cases that we have been involved with, none have led to the granting of a possession order. The message we need to get out is that with support and legal assistance homes can be protected.

Bin the Bedroom Tax Inverclyde received a distress message from Diane, a poor and disabled bedroom tax victim on Monday of last week.

Diane had historical arrears and was being taken to court the next day. The campaign quickly notified the Scottish Anti Bedroom Tax Federation for assistance in a protest.

With less than a day’s notice around 40 people gathered to oppose the eviction.

But the housing association refused to budge and will continue to press for Diane’s eviction. Diane refuses to pay this callous tax, so more than likely we will be protesting again outside Greenock Sheriff Court on 6 January.
