Campaign launched to save cancer services in east London

Issue No. 2384

Around 70 doctors and consultants launched a campaign in east London last week against NHS England’s new plans to move cancer services out of the area.

The plans would also take heart services from the London Chest Hospital and the Heart Hospital to Barts.

The GPs, anaesthetists and surgeons want to stop specialist cancer treatments being cut from Barts Health in east London and concentrated in University College Hospital (UCH) in central London.

GP Jackie Applebee, chair of Tower Hamlets BMA doctors’ union told Socialist Worker, “We’re angry and worried—they’re talking about very sick people who need care close to home.

Health workers have also questioned how these decisions were made.
