Fury at cuts to child benefits

Issue No. 2384

A panicking David Cameron has been forced to deny plans to scrap child benefits and tax credits for families with more than two children. Nadhim Zahawi MP put forward the suggestion, saying it would save “billions”.

This would take £696.80 in benefits a year from the third child of a couple earning less than £50,000 between them. If the child’s parents earned less than £30,000 they’d also lose a whopping £2,725 a year in tax credits.

Cameron’s spokesperson quickly distanced him from the plans. This is a reminder that the fight against the bedroom tax has made the Tories afraid of the backlash their benefit cuts can provoke.
