In the fourth week of protests 200,000 people took to the streets of Kiev on Sunday of last week. They are protesting against the Ukrainian government’s decision to ally more closely to Russia and leave talks to integrate into the European Union (EU).
US Republican Senator John McCain, addressed the rally. Tory minister William Hague has also spoken in support of the protesters as the ruling classes of east and West compete for influence.
The EU has now suspended negotiations on the agreement. The Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych was set to meet Russia’s president Vladimir Putin on Tuesday of this week. The Russian government has promised loans to Ukraine’s cash strapped economy to bind the country further into its control.
