Defend women's rights to control their bodies

Issue No. 2387

Sensationalist headlines in the Independent newspaper claimed that abortions by immigrant women have led to thousands of “lost girls”.

The government has now called an investigation into allegations of “gender selective” abortion.  Yet only last year it issued a report which concluded there was no evidence of gender selection abortions among women not born in Britain.

The Independent’s wild claims are not based on any material evidence. They looked at census figures for certain immigrant families, saw an “imbalance in the sex ratio” and simply asserted it must be because of gender selective abortions.

Now some Tories say women shouldn’t be allowed to see pregnancy scans until as late as 30 weeks so they can’t tell the gender.

Socialists stand for a women’s right to control her body.  Women of all backgrounds have many different reasons for how and when they want to control their fertility.

Restricting access to abortions will lead desperate women to seek dangerous alternatives.

This is yet another Tory attack on abortion rights.  The talk of “lost girls”— equating a living child with an unwanted pregnancy—is a classic tactic of anti-abortionists.

We have to stop them using racist scaremongering about immigrants to push through attacks on a woman’s right to choose.
