Labour campaign backs Scottish independence

Issue No. 2388

Around 350 people packed into the Scottish TUC offices to take part in the Labour supporters for Independence launch in Glasgow last week.

It was a highly significant event in the campaign for Scottish independence.

Glasgow comedian Elaine Smith chaired the rally.

Senior Labour figures spoke and backed the initiative. These included Alex Mosson, former Lord Provost of Glasgow, and former Labour leader of Strathclyde regional council, Charles Gray.

Ex treasurer of the Scottish Labour Party and current editor of Scottish Left Review Bob Thomson also spoke.

People called on Scottish Labour Party members and supporters to get behind the independence campaign.

Thomson launched a blistering attack on former Labour chancellor Alistair Darling and the Better Together campaign he helps run against independence.

Importantly, Thomson also argued for a campaign to convince working class people who traditionally vote Labour to now seize the chance to vote for independence.

He said this meant taking the yes campaign out of the hands of Alex Salmond and the Scottish National Party and putting old Labour values at its heart.
