Around 250 teachers and parents took part in a Question Time in Hammersmith, west London. 

On the panel were NUT general secretary Christine Blower, writer Michael Rosen and Julian Bell, the Labour leader of Ealing Council. 

TV presenter Adrian Chiles chaired the event, which was organised by Working Towards a National Campaign for Education.

The NASUWT union called off a planned strike at Birchgrove Comprehensive School in Swansea. 

It was set to take place on Thursday of last week in response to an unacceptable management response to action short of a strike.

The union said it made enough progress in talks with management to call off the strike.nThe NUT was set to hold a London-wide rally on Wednesday of this week. The union’s national executive was due to meet the following day and set a date for a national strike.

Activists in Brixton, south London, have called a public meeting to discuss plans for a free school in the area.

The meeting is planned for Wednesday 5 February, 6.30pm, Karibu Centre, Gresham Road, Brixton, SW9 7PH.
