Solid action in Edinburgh College

by Donny Gluckstein
Issue No. 2390

A strike by lecturers at Edinburgh College got off to a flying start on Thursday of last week.

The action is against an attempt by management to do away with any limit to the hours lecturers are in front of classes.

All classes were cancelled. There were large picket lines and a mass lobby of over 200 at the Scottish parliament.

EIS union staff had to stay late the night before the strike to process applications to join the union.

Thousands of students have signed a petition of support. The EIS has called a national protest to support the strike for 1 March.

The strike is set to escalate to a sustained three days a week, and collections for a hardship fund have begun.

Rush messages of support to and donations to the Edinburgh College Hardship Fund, EIS, 46 Moray Place, Edinburgh EH3 6BH (cheques payable to ‘History Travel Club’).

UCU union members are fighting for an escalation in their pay campaign.

The union’s further education committee (FEC) decided to call no further strikes.

Workers are calling for a recall FEC and/or a sector conference to review the campaign.

UCU members in further and higher education will meet for a national activists’ meeting on Saturday 1 March in central London to discuss how to take the fight forward.
