Swiss vote against migrant workers gives boost to racists

Issue No. 2390

Some 50.3 percent of voters rejected freedom of movement for workers from European Union (EU) countries in a Swiss referendum last week.

Switzerland, which is not part of the EU, will now abandon a its border treaty and return to a system of quotas for migrants.

The right wing Swiss People’s Party led a campaign based on myths that migrants undermine pay, and take jobs and homes.

Right wingers across Europe have seized on this as reversing the trend to more open borders within Europe.
