Virgin West Coast cleaners call off strike

Issue No. 2392

Cleaners on Virgin West Coast’s Pendolino fleet called off a planned 24-hour strike after a settlement was reached reinstating a victimised union member.

The strike was due to take place on Monday of this week.

One cleaner, working for contractors Voith, was charged with the theft of a chocolate bar.

But a disciplinary hearing found no evidence to back the charges and the RMT union member was cleared and free to return to work.

Yet West Coast’s maintenance contractors refused the cleaning team member access to their premises despite his exoneration.

It backed down after a threat of strikes.
