Glasgow residential care workers were set to meet on Wednesday and Thursday of this week to consider an improved offer from bosses.
The Unison union members have struck for seven days so far this year.
They have another three 72-hour strikes planned, starting on Friday of this week, if council bosses don’t come up with a good enough offer.
The workers are battling bosses’ imposition of longer shifts, pay cuts of up to £1,500 a year and enforced worse job roles.
One Unison shop steward from a residential home in the west of the city spoke to Socialist Worker about the dispute.
She said, “Management weren’t willing to negotiate at first but now they’ve got egg on their face because our strikes have been so strong.
“They are the ones who have created this situation.
“The only reason they have come back with an improved offer is because we struck back and stood up for ourselves.
“We’ve been striking to defend the service for residents. Other Unison members who haven’t joined the strike for whatever reasons need to have a good look at why we’re doing this.
“If we don’t fight and it goes through they’ll just come back for our holidays, overtime or something else.
“We can’t just let them walk all over us.”
Some strikers have concerns about aspects of the new deal.
“I think we need more clarification over the issue of medication,” said the shop steward.
“Some residents can be on as much 10-15 tablets each morning. That’s a heavy responsibility for social care assistants. It all impacts on the residents.
“Some of the residents have been out on the picket line to stand with us. And the residents’ families have also given us a lot of support too.
“We’ve had other council workers give us support and they’re interested in our dispute. They’re facing similar issues. I think they can take confidence from what we’ve done.
“This is the only way to tackle this current management—show them we are strong and united and willing to fight to defend these services.”
