South African platinum strikers to march

Issue No. 2393

Thousands of striking platinum miners were set to march on South Africa’s parliament on Thursday of this week.

Negotiations have dragged on for five weeks as management claim they cannot afford the “living wage” the AMCU union is demanding. The union is demanding a rise that would almost double the pay of some workers.

The union says its march in the capital Pretoria will present a “memorandum” to president Jacob Zuma.
