Man ‘starved’ after an Atos ruling stopped his benefits

Issue No. 2393

A disabled man starved to death in David Cameron’s constituency last year, four months after his benefits were cut, a coroners court heard last week. Atos Healthcare declared Mark Wood “fit for work” despite the fact that he had serious health problems.

His benefits were cut leaving him with just £40 a week to live on. Mark weighed just 5st 8lbs when he died.

Mark’s GP Nicholas Ward had thought that Mark wasn’t well enough to cope with the stress of losing his benefits.

But he said that neither Atos nor the government had asked him about Mark’s medical history. Mark’s sister Cathie said, “Atos are completely to blame.

“Anyone who knew Mark’s complex problems would see he couldn’t work. When the police found him there was very little food in the house, just half a banana and a tin of tuna.”

Cathie added, “I’d like David Cameron and his government to be aware of the personal cost of their policies and how they are affecting real people and causing real heartache.”
