Tory cuts fuel food banks

Issue No. 2393

Tory benefit cuts and low wages have driven up food poverty across Britain.

The BBC Panorama programme revealed this week that over a third of councils in England and Wales are now subsidising food banks.

The total cost is around £3 million.

Benefit sanctions, which can take away claimants’ entire income, are part of the problem.

The Independent on Sunday reported that sanctions hit young people hardest—and that more than 45,000 claimants under 24 years old have been wrongly sanctioned.

This includes people sanctioned for missing interviews they were not told about.
