Protests defend abortion in Spain

Issue No. 2394

Mass demonstrations took place around the Spanish state last Saturday to mark International Women’s Day.

Many were thousands or tens of thousands strong. The protests were swelled by anger at a harsh proposed change to abortion law, approved by the government the previous day.

Polls suggest 80 percent of people oppose the proposals, which would ban abortion except in cases of rape and some health grounds.
