Activists gather at London Max conference to challenge scapegoating of migrants

by Ken Olende
Issue No. 2395

Up to 100 activists and representatives of various organisations gathered in central London for the Movement Against Xenophobia (Max) conference last Saturday. Speakers debated how to challenge the scapegoating of migrants and the Tories’ immigration bill.

Speakers included Tommy Tomescu from the Alliance Against Discrimination of Central and East Europeans. He said that the kind of scapegoating previously used against black and Asian people was now also directed against Romanians and Bulgarians.

It won’t just go away if people ignore it and needs to be actively challenged. Workshops also looked at a range of issues including ending the detention of asylum seekers, and challenging bigotry in the mainstream media.
