Urgent measures needed in polluted European cities

Public transport was made free in a number of French and Belgian cities last week, as an emergency measure to deal with air pollution. Paris also imposed restrictions on car use. Paris has the fourth worst average air quality of any city in the world.

Last week’s weather briefly made it number one—despite the media’s fixation on pollution in China.

French environment minister Philippe Martin said air quality had become “an emergency and priority”. But the measures were suspended when the immediate crisis passed.
