Vote left in NUT elections

Issue No. 2397

Elections for places on the national executive committee of the NUT teachers’ union end on Wednesday of next week.

They take place during critical debates over what should follow last week’s national strike against Tory education secretary Michael Gove’s attacks.

Socialist Worker supports Socialist Teachers Alliance (STA) candidates and others backed by the STA.

Stefan Simms is an STA candidate in Outer London. He told Socialist Worker, “Our national strike last week was a big success.

“It proves that the NUT can strike without the NASUWT union.”

The NUT’s annual conference later this month will decide on the next steps in the campaign.

Stefan said, “NUT conference should discuss and pass a motion calling for a 48-hour strike in June.

“And I hope that the NASUWT will join any action in the future.”
