Workers shut down Edinburgh museums

Issue No. 2399

Strikes shut down the National Museum of Scotland and The National War Museum in Edinburgh on Friday of last week—in the middle of the school holidays.

Workers in the PCS union walked out at 1pm on Friday in a long-running dispute about weekend allowances. The two museums remained closed until 10am on Saturday.

Some of the museums’ lowest paid staff are being denied a weekend working allowance which is normally paid to compensate staff for working anti-social hours.

Elections to the national executive (NEC) of the PCS union are set to begin on Wednesday of this week. Socialist Worker supporters Paul Williams and Marianne Owens are standing as part of Left Unity which is within the Democracy Alliance.
