Around 100,000 joined a demonstration against austerity and the government in Paris on Saturday of last week.

It was called by the left wing New Anti-capitalist Party (NPA) and Front de Gauche, and supported by more than 200 unions, campaigns and prominent individuals.

It was the first major demonstration since unpopular Labour-style Socialist Party president Francois Hollande appointed right winger Manuel Valls as prime minister following a drubbing in local elections.

It also follows large right wing protests last year.
