General strike shuts Argentina

Issue No. 2399

Three of Argentina’s five union federations called a general strike on Thursday of last week.

Major factories and railways were shut down and demonstrations blocked roads. Far left groups took the lead in building pickets.

The strike opposed the neoliberal policies of the government, and the loss in purchasing power caused by the devaluation of the peso.
