Health workers should not quit Unison

by Sam Strudwick, Interim chair, Waltham Forest Health Unison (pc)
Issue No. 2400

The branch secretary of Waltham Forest Unison Health branch, in east London, and six other stewards resigned from the union last week.

This is regretful. It will send a message that it is not possible to fight back as a Unison member. This can only demoralise workers and boost the bosses.

It is especially misguided to take this damaging step just after the Unison Health conference voted unanimously to ballot for a national strike over pay.

This is a chance to mobilise the half a million NHS workers in Unison—five times more than any other union. No major battle to defend the NHS can be won without them. We must build that fight, and use it to strengthen our union locally.
