We are the Best is undoubtedly one of the best films that I have seen so far this year. It is a hilarious and heartwarming film commanded by three convincing and memorable young protagonists in 1980s Sweden.
The story focuses on Bobo, Klara and Hedvik, three rebellious 12 year old outcasts who set out to create “the best punk band this world has ever seen”.
The film is based on the coming of age graphic novel Never Goodnight by Coco Moodysson. Director husband Lukas Moodysson does her writing justice. There is greatly amusing mockery of typical school traditions such as the glorification of the sports team, the cringe-worthy talent show and the witlessness of patronizing teachers.
But the most captivating elements are the friendship between the girls, who share a wonderful energy and chemistry, and the spontaneity that comes with being a child.
The characters are audacious in taking risks and making a point. Relatable, easy to watch and inspiring, We Are The Best is recommended for anyone who misses the joyful recklessness of childhood—especially if you hated sport.
