Collapse of Palestine peace talks exposes Israel

Issue No. 2401

Israel has pulled out of the latest round of talks with Palestinians.

Even US secretary of state John Kerry declared Israel risks becoming an “apartheid state”.

The Israelis are unhappy that the Palestinian Authority (PA) will form a unity government with Hamas.

Fatah, the political group that Israel currently negotiates with, leads the PA.

Israel branded Hamas as terrorist. It said Hamas couldn’t take part in talks as it doesn’t recognise Israel.

Israel’s government includes many who don’t recognise the right of Palestinians to have their own country.

Hamas is struggling in its power base in besieged Gaza. The fall of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt has lost it a powerful supporter.

Also Hizbollah, seen as a staunch supporter of the fight against Israel and US imperialism, is backing Syria’s president Assad.

The opposition to Assad includes many Palestinians in refugee camps.

The talks collapsed because Israel wasn’t serious about giving any genuine concessions to the Palestinian side.
