Insults about the Hillsborough disaster and attacks on Liverpool football fans were posted on a Wikipedia page from Whitehall computers.
The Liverpool Echo reported that the comments were posted from computers on Whitehall’s secure intranet. It said the computers were in departments including the Treasury and Culture, Media and Sport.
The government said it was making “urgent inquiries” into the claims.
One change altered the name of the Liverpool song You’ll Never Walk Alone to You’ll Never Walk Again.
Another inserted the words, “Blame Liverpool fans”.
The Echo said the same computers were used to amend the Hillsborough and Anfield Wikipedia pages.
Sheila Coleman from the Hillsborough Justice Campaign described the changes as “absolutely appalling”.
She said, “We’ll expect those responsible to be identified and appropriate action taken.”
