Lecturers’ pay vote due

A national e-survey of higher education workers in the UCU union on a 2 percent pay offer is due to end on Thursday of this week. The result should be known by Friday.

The UCU Left, which Socialist Worker supports, is arguing for a no vote. Union leaders refused to recommend either acceptance or rejection.

Mark O’Brien is a researcher at Liverpool university. He told Socialist Worker, “In some places local UCU branches have put a recommendation to reject the offer. But there’s a danger that, although members are very angry over pay, the lack of a recommendation to reject the  offer will cause disorientation and weaken resolve. There has been a complete ineptitude and pessimism among our national leaders.”

UCU Left activists and others argue that the union’s decision to postpone a marking boycott from January boosted bosses’ confidence to go on the offensive.

The UCU Left is arguing for escalating national strikes in response to the bosses’ threats.

Vote for Lesley Kane

Elections are underway for the position of UCU vice president. UCU Left is backing Lesley Kane.

She is standing on a platform of defending workers’ terms and conditions and education.

Defend the Glasgow two

two ucu members at the University of Glasgow were taken directly to a disciplinary investigation for using a template message explaining the reasons behind a one-day strike. UCU general secretary Sally Hunt sent the message.

Soas fractional protest

Fractional teaching staff—those employed on a fraction of a full term contract—are fighting for better terms and conditions at London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (Soas). More than 50 are refusing to work further “unpaid hours”.

Their UCU union has repudiated the action. But Soas UCU branch reiterated its support. Campaigners were set to hold a public meeting on Wednesday of this week at 6pm in KLT, Soas.
